The Power of Antioxidants
Antioxidants are compounds that work against oxidation. Oxidation is the natural by-product of many metabolic processes. The immune system relies on oxidation to penetrate the cell walls of many pathogens that cause illnesses and flu symptoms. Antioxidants do not cancel out this process but will keep it under control.
The process of oxidation creates unstable fragments called free radicals. These try to stabilise themselves by grabbing atoms from other molecules within the cells and setting up a chain reaction. If left to its own devices, the reaction can cause inflammation as the body responds to the process.
Antioxidants are also thought to have a role in slowing the ageing process and helping to support cardiovascular health.
Vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, C and E, as well as selenium, absorb these free radicals.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A helps to protect from free radicals. Vitamin A is also responsible for healthy vision, cell growth and the normal formation and maintenance of the heart, kidney and lungs. Some vitamin A rich sources are fish oils, milk and eggs. Beta carotene is converted into vitamin A within the body, is richer in orange and yellow vegetables, fruits and vegetable oils.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C can regenerate other antioxidants within the body, helping guard against free radical damage. Protein metabolism and wound healing are its other roles and is found mostly in fruits, vegetables and grains.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, which stops the production of reactive oxygen species that form when fat is broken down into energy.
Selenium
Selenium is the only mineral that functions as an antioxidant. It works by targeting the natural hydrogen peroxide within the body and converts it into water. Selenium regulates thyroid function and helps the immune system stay strong and healthy.
Other important antioxidants
Lutein and lycopene are other natural antioxidants found in foods.
Although it is best to receive antioxidants through natural sources, often nutritional supplements or fortified foods can be used to increase antioxidant levels in the body.
The Supplement Factory private label antioxidant gummy formula is packed with vitamins and minerals promoting high antioxidant levels, ensuring that the body is able to reduce inflammation.
