Definition of Food Supplements
In Denmark, food supplements are defined as foodstuffs intended to supplement the normal diet. They are concentrated sources of nutrients or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect and are marketed in dose forms such as capsules, tablets, powders, or liquids.
Registration Process
Before marketing a food supplement in Denmark, businesses must register the product with the DVFA no later than the first day of marketing. The registration process involves submitting a specific form that includes detailed information about the product’s composition, recommended daily dose, and form (e.g., capsule, tablet). This form can be downloaded from the DVFA’s website and should be sent electronically.
Company Registration
All food business operators, including importers from other EU Member States or third countries, must be registered or approved by the DVFA. This requirement ensures that businesses comply with Danish food safety standards.
Labeling Requirements
Food supplements must be labeled in accordance with both EU and Danish regulations. Labels should accurately reflect the product’s contents, including a list of all ingredients, their quantities, recommended dosage, and any warnings or precautions. Labels must also comply with regulations regarding health claims and nutritional information.
Fees
Companies that have registered one or more food supplements in Denmark and have an annual turnover exceeding 50,000 DKK are required to pay an annual fee of 9,382 DKK, plus an additional fee of 751 DKK per registered food supplement. These fees cover expenses related to product safety inspections.
Additional Considerations
If there are changes in the composition of an existing food supplement, a new registration is required, except for changes in the amount of food additives. Companies must also unregister any food supplements they no longer wish to sell in Denmark.
