Regulatory watch for supplement brands: September 2026
In September 2026 the regulators whose notices the Hive tracks published 11 items relevant to supplement brands: 6 FDA recalls, 4 EFSA novel food opinions and 1 Health Canada labelling recall. Each is listed below with its date, what the regulator said and a link to the regulator’s own page.
Recalls in the United States
The FDA’s enforcement reports listed 6 recalls of supplements or supplement ingredients:
- 30 September: American ginseng products in 4 oz and 8 oz net weights, a product of Wisconsin, listed for potential contamination with pesticides (FDA enforcement reports).
- 23 September: an organic moringa leaf powder in an 8 oz pouch, listed for potential Salmonella contamination (FDA).
- 2 September: a liquid dietary supplement shot in a single 2 fl. oz. bottle, which the entry says contains 1,4-DMAA, phenylethylamine and phenibut (FDA).
- 2 September: three herbal formulas from the same brand, each 1.0 fl. oz. (30 mL), listed because the label does not declare walnuts in English (FDA).
By cause, 3 of the 6 concerned a label that did not declare walnuts, 2 concerned potential contamination (pesticides, Salmonella) and 1 concerned a product said to contain 1,4-DMAA, phenylethylamine and phenibut.
Novel food opinions from EFSA
EFSA’s Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens published 4 safety opinions under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, each delivered following a request from the European Commission:
- 21 September: cannabidiol (CBD) isolated from Cannabis sativa L. (EFSA).
- 21 September: a Cannabis sativa L. extract (EFSA).
- 18 September: cannabidiol obtained by chemical synthesis (EFSA).
- 2 September: S-acetyl glutathione (SAG) (EFSA).
An EFSA opinion is a scientific safety assessment; whether a novel food is authorised for sale in the EU is decided separately by the European Commission. Supplement Factory does not work with CBD, so the cannabidiol and cannabis extract opinions are listed for brands that follow that market, not as products the firm makes.
Labelling in Canada
On 16 September Health Canada listed a recall of a supplement for men whose affected lots were incorrectly labelled for the quantity of Vitamin B6 (Health Canada). The listed reason was labelling.
What the month’s notices have in common
Labelling accounted for 4 of the 7 recalls (3 from the FDA, 1 from Health Canada), potential contamination for 2 and a product said to contain 1,4-DMAA, phenylethylamine and phenibut for 1. The testing services Supplement Factory offers include a microbiology group covering Salmonella and allergen statements, including one for nuts. About the data
Items from the Hive’s regulatory feed, which ingests FDA enforcement reports, EFSA publications, Health Canada recalls and FTC releases: 11 distinct notices published between 2 and 30 September 2026 (6 FDA recalls, 4 EFSA opinions, 1 Health Canada recall), counting a notice once where two feeds carried it, read on 8 October 2026. The one FTC release in the month, about a multilevel marketing operator, is left out because it is not a product recall or an ingredient opinion. Each item links to the regulator’s own page.
