How to Choose a UK Supplement Manufacturer: MOQs, Accreditations and the Questions That Actually Matter

Search “best UK supplement manufacturer” and you’ll find a dozen ranked lists. Most are written by people who have never blended a powder or filled a capsule. They rank companies by who paid for the placement, not by who can actually make your product well.

This guide is different. We quote more than 900 supplement briefs a month at Supplement Factory, so we see exactly where new brands get it right, and where they get burned. Here is how to choose a manufacturer that will still be the right fit when your third order is ten times the size of your first.

Start with accreditation, not price

Price is where most brand owners start. It should be the last thing you check. The first is accreditation, because it is the one thing you cannot fix after the fact.

Look for BRCGS certification (the Global Standard for Food Safety) as your baseline, ideally alongside GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice). These are audited, renewed annually, and they are what your retailers, your insurers and Amazon will ask for. A manufacturer that cannot show you a current certificate on request is not a manufacturer you can scale with. Halal, kosher, vegan and organic certifications matter too if your market needs them, but they sit on top of the food-safety foundation, never in place of it.

Understand how MOQs actually work

Minimum order quantities are the single most misunderstood number in this industry, and the one most likely to blow up a launch budget.

MOQs are driven by the format, not by the manufacturer being difficult. A capsule line and a gummy line have completely different economics, so their minimums are different:

  • Capsules and tablets are the most flexible, with the lowest realistic minimums.
  • Powders and stick packs scale with your flavour system and packaging.
  • Gummies and softgels carry the highest minimums, because the moulds, depositing and drying tie up expensive plant for longer.

A manufacturer offering “100 units” of anything is almost always reselling someone else’s stock product with your label on it, not making yours. That is fine if you want a fast, generic entry. It is not custom manufacturing, and you will hit a wall the moment you want to change the formula. Be clear which one you are buying.

Match the manufacturer to your format

The best manufacturer for a gummy brand is rarely the best one for a clinical capsule. Before you shortlist anyone, decide your format, then check they run that line in house rather than outsourcing it.

Supplement Factory manufactures across capsules, tablets, powders and liquids and gels under one roof, which means one point of contact and one set of standards no matter how your range grows. If a “manufacturer” quotes you four formats but owns none of the lines, every problem becomes a game of telephone between them and their subcontractors.

The difference between a filler and a partner

Anyone can put your recipe in a capsule. The manufacturers worth keeping are the ones who improve the brief before it goes into production.

That means a technical team that will tell you when a claimed dose is not legally supportable, when an ingredient sits on the EU “on-hold” botanical list, or when your artwork makes a medicinal claim that will get the product pulled. Compliant, confident formulation is the difference between a product that launches and a product that gets a warning letter. Ask any prospective manufacturer how they handle EFSA claims and label review, and listen for whether they treat it as their job or yours.

Ask about lead times, and what slips them

Custom manufacturing takes time from signed brief to finished stock, and the honest answer to “how long?” is always “it depends.” What it depends on is worth asking about up front: ingredient sourcing, artwork sign-off, and lab testing are the three stages that slip most often. A manufacturer who can name those risks before you ask is one who has managed them before.

The data edge most manufacturers do not have

Choosing ingredients on trend, at the right dose, in the right format, is guesswork for most brands. It does not have to be.

Our Formulation Index tracks what the market is actually asking us to make, drawn from those 900+ monthly briefs, so you can see which ingredients are rising, which formats are winning, and where the demand is heading before you commit tooling to it. No other UK manufacturer publishes its live demand data. It is the closest thing the industry has to a map.

Red flags to walk away from

  • No current accreditation certificate available on request.
  • “MOQs from 100 units” on genuinely custom formulations.
  • Four formats quoted, none of them made in house.
  • No mention of claims or regulatory review anywhere in the conversation.
  • A quote with no breakdown, so you cannot see what you are paying for.

The short version

Check the accreditation first. Understand that MOQs follow the format. Pick a manufacturer that owns the line your product runs on, treats compliance as their job, and can prove they know where the market is heading. Get that right and your manufacturer becomes the least stressful part of building a brand.
