The UK’s nutritional supplement market is expected to reach £13 billion growing at a CAGR of 6% by 2023. Europe is also set to see an increase, with an estimated $33.68 billion from 2017 rising by 6.48% in the same period.

Worldwide, the health and wellness supplements market reached $207.59 billion in 2018, and is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 6.45% reaching $283.75 billion by 2023.

With the increasing awareness from consumers about the importance of healthy lifestyles, fuelling workouts and eating healthily driving the market, the rise in the number of product launches is inevitable.

By type of ingredients, Botanical supplements have the highest share in Europe in 2018. The leading categories consisted of vitamins, proteins, amino acids, enzymes and botanical supplements.

Nootropics

When looking at supplement trends, nootropics are easy to choose. Nootropics are substances that can be taken to improve mental performance in healthy individuals. They are most often used to boost memory, focus, creativity, intelligence and motivation. Nootropics may also reduce age related declines in brain function.

The theory is that they stimulate neurons and increase blood and oxygen flow to your brain, which supposedly leads to improvements in your attention span and other areas of cognitive functioning.

Collagen

Collagen has gained a much broader interest over the past year, with increasing popularity adding unflavoured collagen into smoothies and lattes while on the quest for glowing skin, healthier joints and healthier gut.

As we enter 2019, more supplement trends using collagen and bone broth products will enter the market and we will see an increase in opportunity to consume collagen daily. Collagen will come in the form of powders, gummies and drink products, as well as the ever-popular capsule option. Vegan friendly options will also boost sales as consumers look for non-animal derived options.

Within the last few years, the amount of scientific research released regarding mushrooms has increased largely. Noted in our 2017 supplement trends, mushrooms hold the powder to support the immune system, blood sugar balance, brain health, liver health, hormone balance and even boosting energy levels.

In response to the growing amount of research promoting the health benefits of mushrooms, the supplement industry is introducing more ways to try and include mushrooms into powder and capsule blends.

With a 29% growth increase in 2017 alone, zinc is rapidly gathering interest within the food supplement market. Although the mineral is needed in trace amounts, the impact it has on the body is significant from better blood clotting, through to a reduced macular degeneration risk, its benefits seem almost infinite.

Probiotics

Although a powerful market within the food supplements industry in 2017, probiotics are back as drinks and food items began to boom, “shelf stable” probiotic powders and supplements are set to make their own impact this year. Wellness focussed brands are making it easier to get more probiotics into your diet daily by adding stable strains into nutrition bars, capsule blends and wellness supplements.

Hemp

Hemp seeds and oils are not a new product within the market, as most body care lovers are already very familiar with its benefits. But a new interest in the potential benefits stemming from other parts of hemp plants has many brands looking to explore the booming cannabis and CBD oil interest. While CBD is still slightly taboo, retailers and consumers are noticing the CBD oil craze through food innovation networking and exhibitions.
