Zinc

Zinc is a trace element that is essential for a healthy immune system. A lack of zinc will create an easy way in for bacteria and illnesses. Zinc is responsible for several functions within the body, helping to stimulate the activity of around 100 enzymes, with only a small amount of zinc being necessary to benefit the body.

Zinc is needed for the growth and maintenance of the human body, being found within several systems and biological reactions, as well as being needed for immune function, wound healing, blood clotting, thyroid function and much more. Meats, seafood, dairy, nuts, legumes and whole grains often contain the highest doses of zinc.

Zinc deficiency is common worldwide, with symptoms including slow growth, low insulin levels, loss of appetite, hair loss and a poor sense of both taste and smell. Zinc also plays a key role in maintaining vision, with a high presence in the eye. Low zinc levels can also be associated with male infertility, depression and can be fought with a simple zinc supplement.

Benefits of Zinc

Immunity

Zinc is often beneficial as a remedy for fighting colds and symptoms of illnesses. Research has shown that zinc can interfere with the molecular process that causes bacteria to build up within the nasal passages, blocking their effects. Another research report conducted by the Medical Education Center of Chandigarh India found that when zinc was administered within 24 hours of cold symptoms starting, the duration of the symptoms was significantly reduced compared to the control group that did not supplement with zinc. Fewer patients in the zinc group had cold related symptoms five and seven days after experiencing the first symptoms, compared to those who did not consume a zinc supplement.

Helps Improve Muscle Growth and Repair

Zinc plays a crucial role in cell division and cell growth, zinc benefits muscle repairmen and growth by making it possible for the body to heal itself and maintain strength in both muscular and skeletal systems. Zinc also helps with the release of testosterone, growth hormone and insulin. It benefits muscle mass as it helps to increase the amount of testosterone the body can produce following exercise, especially after weight training as it increases the conversion rate of androstenedione to testosterone.
